What is my weighted-capped GPA?

Count your A-G semester grades from 10th and 11th grade and your honors semesters. The UC GPA calculator gives the weighted-capped GPA the University of California uses, plus the unweighted and fully weighted GPAs.

Your numbers

UC GPA (weighted-capped)
3.80

Your UC GPA (weighted-capped) is 3.80.

Unweighted
3.40
Fully weighted
3.80
Honors points counted
8
Semester grades
20
Grade points
68

UC GPA (weighted-capped): 3.80. Your UC GPA (weighted-capped) is 3.80.

How to calculate

Works out the UC GPA used for University of California admission: 10th and 11th grade A-G semester grades on a 4-point scale, with honors points capped at 8.

Example with the default inputs (A semesters 10, B semesters 8, C semesters 2, D semesters 0, F semesters 0, Honors semesters in 10th grade 2, Honors semesters in 11th grade 6): Your UC GPA (weighted-capped) is 3.80.

Method: Grade points = 4 × A + 3 × B + 2 × C + 1 × D (F = 0). Honors points = the smaller of 8 and (the smaller of 4 and the 10th-grade honors semesters) + the 11th-grade honors semesters. UC GPA = (grade points + honors points) ÷ semester grades.

  • Count only A-G courses from the summer after 9th grade through the summer after 11th grade, one grade per semester; pluses and minuses do not count.
  • Honors points are for UC honors-level semesters graded A, B or C. For applicants from outside California, UC gives them for AP and IB courses only.
  • GPAs are shown to 2 decimal places, halves rounded up.

How it works

Count the semester grades in A-G courses from the summer after 9th grade through the summer after 11th grade: A, B, C, D and F semesters (whole numbers from 0 to 200 each). Pluses and minuses are ignored.

  • Semester grades N = A + B + C + D + F (at least 1).
  • Grade points P = 4 × A + 3 × B + 2 × C + 1 × D (F counts 0).
  • Honors points. With H₁₀ the honors semesters graded A, B or C in 10th grade and H₁₁ those in 11th grade (and the summer after it): capped honors = the smaller of 8 and (the smaller of 4 and H₁₀) + H₁₁. H₁₀ + H₁₁ cannot be more than A + B + C (no answer).
  • UC GPA (weighted-capped) = (P + capped honors) ÷ N.
  • Unweighted = P ÷ N.
  • Fully weighted = (P + H₁₀ + H₁₁) ÷ N, with no cap.

Output format. Each GPA is text with exactly 2 decimal places, rounded half up from the exact fraction.

Worked examples by hand

10 A, 8 B, 2 C; honors 2 in 10th, 6 in 11th. N = 20; P = 40 + 24 + 4 = 68; honors = min(2, 4) + 6 = 8. Weighted-capped = 76 ÷ 20 = 3.80; unweighted = 68 ÷ 20 = 3.40; fully weighted = 3.80.

12 A, 6 B, 2 C; honors 6 in 10th, 8 in 11th. P = 48 + 18 + 4 = 70; honors = min(min(6, 4) + 8, 8) = 8. Weighted-capped = 78 ÷ 20 = 3.90; unweighted 3.50; fully weighted = (70 + 14) ÷ 20 = 4.20.

5 A, 7 B, 3 C, 1 D, 1 F; honors 3 in 10th. N = 17; P = 20 + 21 + 6 + 1 = 48; honors 3. Weighted-capped = 51 ÷ 17 = 3.00; unweighted = 48 ÷ 17 = 2.8235… → 2.82.

Other questions people ask

How is the UC GPA calculated?

Take every A-G semester grade from the summer after 9th grade through the summer after 11th grade. A is 4 points, B 3, C 2, D 1, F 0. Add one honors point per UC honors semester graded A, B or C, up to the cap, and divide by the number of semester grades.

What is the honors cap?

At most 8 honors points in all, and at most 4 of them from 10th grade. Extra honors semesters still count as grades, but earn no extra point.

Do pluses and minuses count?

No. A+, A and A− are all 4 points; B+, B and B− are all 3; and so on.

Does 9th or 12th grade count?

No. Only the summer after 9th grade through the summer after 11th grade.

What is the difference between weighted-capped and fully weighted?

Weighted-capped adds at most 8 honors points (4 from 10th grade). Fully weighted adds a point for every honors semester graded A, B or C, with no cap. Unweighted adds none.

Which courses earn honors points?

For California residents, UC-approved honors-level courses: AP, IB Higher Level, UC-transferable college courses and UC-certified honors courses. For applicants from outside California, only AP and IB courses. A D or F earns no honors point.
