How to calculate
Computes the average order value (AOV) of a store from its revenue and number of orders, or the revenue or the orders from the other two.
Example with the default inputs (Revenue from orders $54,000.00, Orders 1,200): $54,000.00 from 1,200 orders is an average order value of $45.00.
Formula: AOV = revenue ÷ orders; revenue = AOV × orders; orders = revenue ÷ AOV.
- Revenue is the sales from the orders after discounts, before tax and shipping, as in Shopify’s sales report.
- Arithmetic is exact on the typed decimals; money shows to the cent and orders to the whole number, halves up.

How it works
With the revenue from orders R (sales after discounts, before tax and shipping) and the number of orders N:
- Average order value AOV = R ÷ N
- Revenue R = AOV × N
- Orders N = R ÷ AOV
Fill in any two of the revenue, the orders and the AOV, and the calculator works out the third. If you fill in all three, they must agree.
Rules:
- The revenue is $0 to $10 trillion, the orders more than 0 and at most 100 million, and the AOV $0 to $100,000.
- An AOV of $0 cannot give the orders, because any number of orders fits. Revenue of $0 with an AOV above $0 means no orders, so it has no answer either.
- A result too large or too small to show as a number gives no answer.
- The arithmetic is exact on the decimals you type. Money shows to the cent and orders to the whole number, with halves rounded up (away from 0).
Assumptions
- Revenue is the sales from the orders after discounts, leaving out tax and shipping, as in Shopify's sales report.
Worked examples by hand
Shopify's December. 10 orders, $1,000 of gross sales and $200 of discounts: R = 1,000 − 200 = $800, so AOV = 800 ÷ 10 = $80.
Revenue from 1,200 orders at $45. R = 45 × 1,200 = $54,000.
Orders for $25,000 at $62.50. N = 25,000 ÷ 62.50 = 400.
$100 from 3 orders. AOV = 100 ÷ 3 = 33.333…, shown as $33.33.
Other questions people ask
What is AOV?
AOV, average order value, is the average amount a customer spends each time they place an order. It is the revenue from orders divided by the number of orders.
How do I calculate average order value?
Divide the revenue from your orders by the number of orders. Shopify's example: 10 orders with $1,000 of sales and $200 of discounts have an AOV of (1,000 − 200) ÷ 10 = $80.
Should revenue include tax, shipping and discounts?
Shopify's sales report takes discounts off and leaves out tax and shipping, so the AOV reflects only what customers paid for the products. Whatever you choose, use the same rule each time so the numbers compare.
How many orders do I need to reach a revenue goal?
Divide the goal by your AOV. With an AOV of $62.50, $25,000 of revenue takes 25,000 ÷ 62.50 = 400 orders.
Is AOV the same as revenue per customer?
No. AOV is per order, while revenue per customer counts every order a customer places in a period. A customer who places 3 orders of $40 has a $40 AOV but brings $120 of revenue.
Do returns and order edits change the AOV?
Not in Shopify's sales report: its AOV leaves out changes made after an order is placed, such as edits, exchanges and returns. It reflects what customers spent when they ordered. If you take returns off your revenue instead, say so when you compare.
