How to calculate

Computes a week’s pay with overtime: regular pay up to 40 hours and 1.5 times the hourly rate after that (federal FLSA rule), or your own limit and multiplier.

Example with the default inputs (Hourly pay $20.00, Hours worked this week 45, Overtime after (hours a week) 40, Overtime rate (times hourly pay) 1.5): At $20.00 an hour, 45 hours in a week pay $950.00, of which $150.00 is overtime.

Method: regular pay = min(hours, limit) × rate; overtime pay = max(0, hours − limit) × rate × multiplier; total = regular pay + overtime pay. Federal law: limit 40 hours a workweek, multiplier 1.5.

  • Federal rules only (Fair Labor Standards Act): overtime is 1.5 times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states also have daily overtime or double time; set your own limit and multiplier for those.
  • Each workweek stands alone: hours are not averaged over two or more weeks.
  • The regular rate is one hourly rate. Bonuses, piece rates and several rates change the regular rate and are not included.
  • Pay is gross, before tax.

  1. Hourly pay $18.00, Hours worked this week 52, Overtime after (hours a week) 40, Overtime rate (times hourly pay) 1.5 gives Regular pay $720.00, Overtime hours 12, Overtime rate $27.00, Overtime pay $324.00, Pay for the week $1,044.00.Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: 40 × 18 = 720; 12 × 27 = 324; 720 + 324 = 1,044
  2. Hourly pay $12.00, Hours worked this week 46, Overtime after (hours a week) 40, Overtime rate (times hourly pay) 1.5 gives Pay for the week $588.00, Overtime pay $108.00.Source: 29 CFR 778.110(a): $12 an hour for 46 hours is a weekly wage of $588
  3. Hourly pay $25.00, Hours worked this week 38, Overtime after (hours a week) 40, Overtime rate (times hourly pay) 1.5 gives Pay for the week $950.00, Overtime hours 0, Overtime pay $0.00.Source: DOL Fact Sheet #23: overtime is due only for hours over 40 in a workweek; 38 × 25 = 950
  4. Hourly pay $30.00, Hours worked this week 50, Overtime after (hours a week) 40, Overtime rate (times hourly pay) 2 gives Overtime rate $60.00, Overtime pay $600.00, Pay for the week $1,800.00.Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: double time: 40 × 30 = 1,200; 10 × 60 = 600; total 1,800

How overtime pay is worked out

  • regular hours = the smaller of the hours worked and the limit
  • overtime hours = hours worked − limit, or 0 when you worked the limit or less
  • overtime rate = hourly pay × multiplier
  • regular pay = regular hours × hourly pay
  • overtime pay = overtime hours × overtime rate
  • pay for the week = regular pay + overtime pay

Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act the limit is 40 hours in a workweek and the multiplier is 1.5 (time and a half). Both are under Overtime rules, so you can change them, for example to 2 for double time.

Assumptions

  • Federal rules only. Hours are counted per workweek, a fixed period of 7 days in a row. Each week stands alone.
  • One regular hourly rate. Bonuses, commissions and several pay rates change the regular rate under the FLSA and are not included.
  • State daily overtime rules are not included.
  • Pay is gross, before tax.

Worked examples by hand

$18 an hour, 52 hours. Regular pay = 40 × 18 = $720. Overtime hours = 52 − 40 = 12. Overtime rate = 18 × 1.5 = $27. Overtime pay = 12 × 27 = $324. Week = 720 + 324 = $1,044.

$12 an hour, 46 hours (29 CFR 778.110). Regular pay = 40 × 12 = $480. Overtime pay = 6 × 18 = $108. Week = $588.

$25 an hour, 38 hours. No hours over 40, so no overtime. Week = 38 × 25 = $950.

$30 an hour, 50 hours, double time. Overtime rate = 30 × 2 = $60. Regular pay = 40 × 30 = $1,200. Overtime pay = 10 × 60 = $600. Week = $1,800.

Other questions people ask

How is overtime calculated?

Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), hours over 40 in a workweek are paid at least 1.5 times the regular rate. At $18 an hour for 52 hours: 40 × 18 = $720 regular pay, 12 × 27 = $324 overtime, $1,044 in total.

Is overtime based on hours a day or hours a week?

Under federal law it is hours a week. The FLSA does not require overtime for more than 8 hours in a day, or for weekends or holidays as such. Some states add daily rules: California pays 1.5 times for hours over 8 in a workday and 2 times over 12. This calculator follows the federal weekly rule only.

Can overtime be averaged over two weeks?

No. Under the FLSA each workweek stands alone. 30 hours one week and 50 the next still earn 10 hours of overtime in the second week.

What is double time?

Double time is 2 times the hourly rate. Federal law does not require it, but some states and many union contracts do for long days or certain hours. Set the overtime rate to 2 under Overtime rules.

Do salaried workers get overtime?

Some do. Many salaried workers are exempt from overtime if their job duties and pay meet the FLSA tests, but others are not exempt and must get overtime. For a non-exempt salaried worker, the regular rate is the weekly salary divided by the hours it is meant to pay for.

Is overtime pay taxed more?

Overtime is taxed as ordinary wages. A bigger paycheck can have more tax withheld, but the rate is not special. This calculator shows pay before tax.
