How to calculate

Computes the time-and-a-half rate (1.5 times the hourly rate) and the pay for overtime hours, or the hourly rate or hours from the overtime pay.

Example with the default inputs (Hourly pay $20.00, Overtime hours 5): At $20.00 an hour, time and a half is $30.00 an hour, so 5 overtime hours pay $150.00.

Formula: overtime pay = 1.5 × hourly pay × overtime hours; time-and-a-half rate = 1.5 × hourly pay (FLSA: hours over 40 in a workweek).

  • Time and a half is 1.5 times the regular hourly rate, the federal overtime rate under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
  • Under federal law, overtime hours are the hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states add daily overtime; this calculator follows the federal rule only.
  • The regular rate is one hourly rate, with no bonuses or piece rates.
  • Pay is gross, before tax.

How time and a half is worked out

  • time-and-a-half rate = 1.5 × hourly pay
  • overtime pay = 1.5 × hourly pay × overtime hours

Fill in any two of hourly pay, overtime hours and overtime pay. The calculator finds the third:

  • hourly pay = overtime pay ÷ (1.5 × overtime hours)
  • overtime hours = overtime pay ÷ (1.5 × hourly pay)

It then shows the time-and-a-half rate (1.5 × hourly pay) and the double time rate (2 × hourly pay) for comparison.

Assumptions

  • Time and a half is 1.5 times one regular hourly rate (the federal overtime rate). Bonuses and piece rates, which change the regular rate, are not included.
  • Under federal law, overtime hours are the hours over 40 in a workweek. State daily overtime rules are not included.
  • All values are more than 0. Pay is gross, before tax.

Limits

Hourly pay is more than $0 and at most $100,000; overtime hours more than 0 and at most 10,000; overtime pay more than $0 and at most $1,000,000,000. A solved value outside these limits has no answer.

Worked examples by hand

$12 an hour, 6 overtime hours (29 CFR 778.110). Time and a half = 12 × 1.5 = $18. Overtime pay = 18 × 6 = $108. Double time = $24.

$18 an hour, 5 overtime hours. Time and a half = 18 × 1.5 = $27. Overtime pay = 27 × 5 = $135.

$150 for 4 overtime hours. Hourly pay = 150 ÷ (1.5 × 4) = $25. Time-and-a-half rate = 25 × 1.5 = $37.50 (the same as 150 ÷ 4).

$20 an hour, $210 of overtime pay. Overtime hours = 210 ÷ (1.5 × 20) = 210 ÷ 30 = 7. Time and a half = $30.

Other questions people ask

How do I calculate time and a half?

Multiply your hourly pay by 1.5. At $20 an hour, time and a half is 20 × 1.5 = $30 an hour. Then multiply by your overtime hours: 5 hours pay 5 × 30 = $150.

When do I get time and a half?

Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt workers get at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Federal law does not require it for weekends, holidays or more than 8 hours in a day, although some states and employers pay it then.

What is time and a half for $15 an hour?

15 × 1.5 = $22.50 an hour. Double time would be $30 an hour.

How do I find my hourly rate from my overtime pay?

Divide the overtime pay by the overtime hours to get the time-and-a-half rate, then divide by 1.5. $150 for 4 hours is $37.50 an hour at time and a half, so the hourly rate is 37.50 ÷ 1.5 = $25.

What is the difference between time and a half and double time?

Time and a half is 1.5 times the hourly rate; double time is 2 times. Federal law requires time and a half for hours over 40 in a week. Double time comes from some state laws and employment contracts.

How much is my whole paycheck with overtime?

Add 40 hours at your regular rate to the overtime pay. At $12 an hour and 46 hours: 40 × 12 = $480 plus 6 × 18 = $108, $588 in all. The overtime calculator does this for the whole week.
