How to calculate

Converts pay for any period (hourly, daily, weekly, every two weeks, twice a month, monthly, quarterly or yearly) to every other period.

Example with the default inputs (Per year $60,000.00, Hours a week 40, Days a week 5): Pay of $60,000.00 a year is $28.85 an hour, $1,153.85 a week and $5,000.00 a month.

Formula: yearly = weekly × 52 = every two weeks × 26 = twice a month × 24 = monthly × 12 = quarterly × 4; weekly = hourly × hours a week = daily × days a week.

  • A year has 52 weeks, 26 two-week pay periods, 24 half-month pay periods, 12 months and 4 quarters.
  • Pay is gross: before tax and other deductions. Every paid hour earns the same rate, with no overtime.
  • Paid holidays and vacation are paid weeks, so they do not change the conversion.

How the salary is converted

Every period converts through the year:

  • per year: the yearly pay
  • per quarter: yearly ÷ 4
  • per month: yearly ÷ 12
  • twice a month: yearly ÷ 24 (24 pay days a year)
  • every two weeks: yearly ÷ 26 (26 pay days a year)
  • per week: yearly ÷ 52

The shorter periods come from the week:

  • per hour = weekly ÷ hours a week
  • per day = weekly ÷ days a week

Enter the pay for any one period, plus hours and days a week. The calculator finds every other period. For example, monthly pay goes to a week as monthly × 12 ÷ 52, the same conversion federal overtime rules use for salaries (29 CFR 778.113).

Assumptions

  • A year has 52 weeks. Pay is the same every week.
  • Pay is gross: before tax and other deductions.
  • Every paid hour earns the same rate, with no overtime premium.
  • Paid holidays and vacation count as paid time and do not change the numbers.

Limits

Every pay amount is more than $0 and at most: $1,000,000,000 per year or per quarter; $100,000,000 per month, twice a month, every two weeks or per week; $10,000,000 per day; $1,000,000 per hour. Hours a week are more than 0 and at most 168; days a week more than 0 and at most 7. A solved amount outside these limits has no answer.

Worked examples by hand

$30 an hour, 37.5 hours over 5 days. Weekly = 30 × 37.5 = $1,125. Daily = 1,125 ÷ 5 = $225. Yearly = 1,125 × 52 = $58,500. Every two weeks = 58,500 ÷ 26 = $2,250. Twice a month = 58,500 ÷ 24 = $2,437.50. Monthly = 58,500 ÷ 12 = $4,875. Quarterly = 58,500 ÷ 4 = $14,625.

$5,000 a month, 40 hours over 5 days. Yearly = 5,000 × 12 = $60,000. Weekly = 60,000 ÷ 52 = $1,153.85 (5,000 × 12 ÷ 52). Hourly = 1,153.85 ÷ 40 = $28.85. Daily = 1,153.85 ÷ 5 = $230.77. Twice a month = $2,500, every two weeks = $2,307.69, quarterly = $15,000.

$2,000 twice a month, 40 hours a week. Yearly = 2,000 × 24 = $48,000. Weekly = 48,000 ÷ 52 = $923.08. Hourly = 923.08 ÷ 40 = $23.08.

$350 a week for 35 hours (29 CFR 778.113). Hourly = 350 ÷ 35 = $10. Daily over 5 days = $70. Yearly = 350 × 52 = $18,200.

$15,000 a quarter, 40 hours a week. Yearly = 15,000 × 4 = $60,000. Weekly = 60,000 ÷ 52 = $1,153.85. Hourly = 1,153.85 ÷ 40 = $28.85.

$200 a day, 32 hours over 4 days. Weekly = 200 × 4 = $800. Hourly = 800 ÷ 32 = $25. Yearly = 800 × 52 = $41,600.

Other questions people ask

How do I convert a yearly salary to monthly pay?

Divide by 12. A $60,000 salary is 60,000 ÷ 12 = $5,000 a month. Per week it is 60,000 ÷ 52 = $1,153.85, and per hour at 40 hours a week it is 1,153.85 ÷ 40 = $28.85.

What is the difference between biweekly and semimonthly pay?

Biweekly pay comes every two weeks, 26 times a year. Semimonthly pay comes twice a month, 24 times a year. On the same salary a semimonthly paycheck is larger: $60,000 is $2,307.69 biweekly but $2,500 semimonthly.

Why is a month not four weeks of pay?

A year has 52 weeks, so a month averages 52 ÷ 12 = 4.33 weeks. Federal overtime rules convert the same way: a monthly salary times 12, divided by 52, is its weekly amount (29 CFR 778.113).

Is this take-home pay?

No. The amounts are gross pay, before federal, state and local income tax, Social Security and Medicare tax, and other deductions such as health insurance or retirement savings. This calculator does not work out tax.

How do paid holidays and vacation change the numbers?

They do not. Paid days off are paid time, so a salary stays the same per year, month and week. The hourly amount is your pay per paid hour.

What is $30 an hour as a salary?

At 37.5 hours a week it is 30 × 37.5 = $1,125 a week and 1,125 × 52 = $58,500 a year. At 40 hours a week it is $62,400 a year.
