How to calculate

Converts a yearly salary to an hourly rate from the hours worked a week and the paid weeks a year, and back.

Example with the default inputs (Yearly salary $60,000.00, Hours a week 40, Paid weeks a year 52): A salary of $60,000.00 a year for 40 hours a week over 52 weeks is $28.85 an hour.

Formula: salary = hourly × hours × weeks, with hours paid a week and weeks paid a year (52 when every week is paid).

  • Pay is gross: before tax and other deductions.
  • Every paid hour earns the same rate. Overtime at a higher rate is not included.
  • Paid time off counts as paid weeks; only unpaid weeks off lower the weeks a year.
  • Per month is the salary ÷ 12, every two weeks is ÷ 26, and per week is ÷ 52.

How salary to hourly is worked out

salary = hourly × hours × weeks

so hourly = salary ÷ (hours × weeks)

  • salary is gross yearly pay.
  • hours is the hours paid in a week (often 40).
  • weeks is the weeks paid in a year: 52, less any unpaid weeks off. Paid vacation and holidays stay in.

Fill in any three of salary, hourly pay, hours a week and paid weeks, and the calculator finds the fourth:

  • hours = salary ÷ (hourly × weeks)
  • weeks = salary ÷ (hourly × hours)

The calculator also spreads the salary evenly over the year: per month = salary ÷ 12, every two weeks = salary ÷ 26, per week = salary ÷ 52.

Assumptions

  • Pay is gross, before tax and deductions.
  • Every paid hour earns the same rate. Overtime pay at a higher rate is not included.
  • Salary, hourly pay, hours and weeks are all more than 0.

Limits

Salary is more than $0 and at most $1,000,000,000; hourly pay more than $0 and at most $1,000,000; hours a week more than 0 and at most 168; paid weeks more than 0 and at most 53. A solved value outside these limits has no answer.

Worked examples by hand

$75,000 a year for 37.5 hours a week. Hours a year = 37.5 × 52 = 1,950. Hourly = 75,000 ÷ 1,950 = $38.46. Per month = 75,000 ÷ 12 = $6,250. Every two weeks = 75,000 ÷ 26 = $2,884.62. Per week = 75,000 ÷ 52 = $1,442.31.

$350 a week for 35 hours (29 CFR 778.113). A year is 350 × 52 = $18,200. Hourly = 18,200 ÷ (35 × 52) = $10.

Other questions people ask

How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the yearly salary by the hours you are paid in a year: hours a week × 52. For $60,000 at 40 hours a week, that is 60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 an hour.

Yes, if you are paid for them: leave the paid weeks at 52. Take off only weeks you are not paid for. With 2 unpaid weeks, $50,000 at 40 hours is 50,000 ÷ (40 × 50) = $25 an hour.
