Method: days = first day of school − start date, in calendar days; weeks = days ÷ 7 rounded down, with the days left.
- The start date is not counted and the first day of school is: from the day before, the count is 1; on the first day, it is 0.
- With the first day left empty, the page counts to the first first day of school on or after the start date in Northside ISD’s published calendars (San Antonio, Texas): August 10, 2026 (2026–27) or August 9, 2027 (2027–28), and names the school year. After August 9, 2027, enter a date.
- A first day of school before the start date has no answer.

How it works
Dates are whole calendar days with no time of day. The start date (“Count from”) is today unless you change it; the page was built on one day and may be opened on another, so the built page shows the count for its build day and your browser replaces it with yours as soon as the page loads. Dates from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2100 work.
- Days until school starts = first day of school − start date, in calendar days. The start date is not counted and the first day is: from the day before the first day the count is 1, and on the first day it is 0.
- In weeks = the calendar days as whole weeks and the days left, written “9 weeks and 6 days”, “42 weeks” when no days are left, and “3 days” or “1 day” under a week.
- First day of school is the date counted to, written like “Monday, August 9, 2027”.
When the first day is left empty, the page uses an example: the first first day of school on or after the start date in the published calendars of Northside ISD (San Antonio, Texas): Monday, August 10, 2026 (the 2026–27 school year) or Monday, August 9, 2027 (the 2027–28 school year). Example calendar then reads “Northside ISD, San Antonio, Texas, 2027–28 school year” (or 2026–27). It is not shown when you enter a date. From a start date after August 9, 2027 with the box empty, there is no answer: “The example calendar has no first day of school after Monday, August 9, 2027. Enter your school’s first day.”
There is no answer when the first day of school is before the start date: “The first day of school is before the start date. Enter the next first day of school.”
Worked examples by hand
From Monday, October 19, 2026, first day left empty. Northside ISD’s 2026–27 first day (August 10, 2026) has passed, so the example is its 2027–28 first day, Monday, August 9, 2027. October 19 to August 9 is 12 days to October 31, then 30 + 31 + 31 + 28 + 31 + 30 + 31 + 30 + 31 = 273 days for November to July, then 9 days in August: 12 + 273 + 9 = 294 days, exactly 42 weeks (42 × 7 = 294).
From August 1, 2026, first day left empty. The example is the 2026–27 first day, August 10, 2026: 9 days, or 1 week and 2 days.
From June 1 to August 9, 2027. 29 days to June 30, 31 in July and 9 in August: 69 days, or 9 weeks and 6 days (69 = 9 × 7 + 6).
From July 4 to September 9, 2027. 27 days to July 31, 31 in August and 9 in September: 67 days, or 9 weeks and 4 days.

Other questions people ask
How many days until school starts?
It depends on your school, because each district sets its own calendar. Enter your school’s first day and the page counts from today. As an example, Northside ISD in San Antonio, Texas starts its 2027–28 school year on Monday, August 9, 2027: from Monday, October 19, 2026 that is 294 days, exactly 42 weeks.
Is today counted?
No. The count starts after the start date and includes the first day of school, as a “days until” count does. On the first day the count is 0; the day before, it is 1.
Why does the page show Northside ISD’s date?
Only as an example of a published calendar, used when the first day is left empty. Northside ISD publishes its calendars two school years ahead: its school years start on August 10, 2026 and August 9, 2027. After August 9, 2027 the page asks for your date until the next calendar is added.
When does school start in the US?
It depends on the district. Northside ISD in Texas started its 2026–27 year on Monday, August 10, 2026, and New York City public schools on Thursday, September 10, 2026, a month later. Check your district’s calendar.
