What is my WCPM reading score?

Type the words read, the errors and the reading time. The WCPM calculator gives words correct per minute and the accuracy, for a timed minute or any length of reading.

WCPM: 106.0. The WCPM is 106.0, with 94.6% accuracy.

How to calculate

Works out words correct per minute (WCPM) for an oral reading fluency check from the words read, the errors and the reading time, with accuracy.

Example with the default inputs (Words read 112, Errors 6, Time: minutes 1, Time: seconds 0): The WCPM is 106.0, with 94.6% accuracy.

Method: Seconds read = minutes × 60 + seconds. WCPM = (words read − errors) × 60 ÷ seconds read. Accuracy = (words read − errors) ÷ words read × 100.

  • Errors are counted as the teacher’s guide says (misread, skipped, substituted or reversed words); self-corrections within a few seconds usually do not count.
  • WCPM and accuracy are shown to 1 decimal place, halves rounded up; the arithmetic is exact.

How it works

  • Seconds read T = minutes × 60 + seconds (minutes from 0 to 600, seconds from 0 to 59.99). T must be at least 1 second (no answer otherwise).
  • Words correct C = words read − errors. Errors cannot be more than the words read (no answer).
  • WCPM = C × 60 ÷ T. For a one-minute read (T = 60) this is just C.
  • Accuracy = C ÷ words read × 100.
  • Words per minute = words read × 60 ÷ T, errors included.

Words read are whole numbers from 1 to 100,000; errors from 0 to 100,000. The arithmetic is exact.

Output format. WCPM is text with exactly 1 decimal place (106.0); accuracy is text with 1 decimal place and a % sign. Both round a half up. Words per minute shows to 1 decimal place.

Worked examples by hand

One-minute read. 112 words, 6 errors, 1:00. C = 106, so 106.0 WCPM; accuracy 106 ÷ 112 = 94.64…% → 94.6%.

Longer read. 250 words, 10 errors, 2:30 = 150 s. C = 240; 240 × 60 ÷ 150 = 96.0 WCPM; accuracy 96.0%; 250 × 60 ÷ 150 = 100 words per minute.

Short read. 85 words, 3 errors, 0:48. C = 82; 82 × 60 ÷ 48 = 102.5 WCPM; accuracy 82 ÷ 85 = 96.47…% → 96.5%.

Seconds with a decimal. 200 words, 13 errors, 1:45.5 = 105.5 s. C = 187; 187 × 60 ÷ 105.5 = 106.350… → 106.4 WCPM; accuracy 93.5%.

Other questions people ask

How do you calculate WCPM?

Subtract the errors from the words read. For a one-minute read, that is the WCPM. For any other time, multiply the words correct by 60 and divide by the seconds read.

What if the student reads for longer than a minute?

Convert the time to seconds. 240 words correct in 2 minutes 30 seconds is 240 × 60 ÷ 150 = 96 WCPM.

What if the student finishes in under a minute?

Use the same rule. 82 words correct in 48 seconds is 82 × 60 ÷ 48 = 102.5 WCPM.

What counts as an error?

Usually a word that is misread, skipped, swapped for another word, or read in the wrong order. A difference in accent or dialect is not an error, and most guides do not count a word the reader corrects at once. Follow your assessment’s own rules.

How is accuracy worked out?

Words correct ÷ words read × 100. 106 correct out of 112 is 94.6%.

What is a good WCPM?

It depends on the grade and the time of year. Compare the score with the norms your school or assessment uses, such as the Hasbrouck and Tindal oral reading fluency norms.
