What is my science GPA?
Pick a grade and the credits for each biology, chemistry, physics and math course. The science GPA calculator shows how to calculate science GPA the BCPM way, on the 4.0 scale.
- Your science GPA
- 3.47
Your science GPA is 3.47 over 15 credits.
- Science credits
- 15
- Grade points
- 52
Your science GPA: 3.47. Your science GPA is 3.47 over 15 credits.
How to calculate
Computes a science grade point average from biology, chemistry, physics and math courses (the BCPM groups on the AMCAS medical school application), on the 4.0 scale.
Example with the default inputs (Science course 1 grade A-, Science course 1 credits 4, Science course 2 grade B+, Science course 2 credits 4, Science course 3 grade B, Science course 3 credits 4, Science course 4 grade A, Science course 4 credits 3, Science course 5 grade Not counted, Science course 6 grade Not counted, Science course 7 grade Not counted, Science course 8 grade Not counted): Your science GPA is 3.47 over 15 credits.
Method: Science GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits) over biology, chemistry, physics and math courses; overall = (GPA so far × credits so far + Σ(grade points × credits)) ÷ (credits so far + Σ(credits)).
- Enter only science courses. The groups are the AMCAS BCPM groups: biology, chemistry, physics and math.
- Grade points are on the 4.0 scale: A+ and A 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D- 0.7, F (or E) 0.0.
- This is an estimate of a science GPA. An application service works out its own figure from your transcripts.
- Courses marked Not counted are left out of both the grade points and the credits; an F counts with 0 points.

- Science course 1 grade A, Science course 1 credits 3, Science course 2 grade B, Science course 2 credits 1.5, Science course 3 grade C+, Science course 3 credits 4, Science course 4 grade Not counted gives Your science GPA 3.02, Science credits 8.5, Grade points 25.7.Source: University of Michigan-Dearborn, Grading System (A, A+ 4.0 through E 0.0; GPA = honor points ÷ hours), https://catalog.umd.umich.edu/academic-policies-campus/grading-system/ (retrieved 2026-11-01)

How it works
This is the GPA calculator for science courses only. Enter biology, chemistry, physics and math courses, the BCPM groups on the AMCAS application.
- Grade points per credit: A+ and A 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D- 0.7, F (or E) 0.0.
- Grade points = Σ(points × credits) over the courses with a letter grade.
- Science credits = Σ(credits) over the same courses. A course marked Not counted is left out of both. An F counts, with 0 points.
- Your science GPA = grade points ÷ science credits.
- Overall science GPA = (GPA so far × credits so far + grade points) ÷ (credits so far + science credits). Total science credits = credits so far + science credits. Both show only when both earlier values are given.
Rules
- There are up to 8 courses. Credits are 0.01 to 30 per course. GPA so far is 0 to 4, and credits so far are 0.01 to 1,000.
- With no course counted there is no answer, with the message "Pick a letter grade for at least one science course."
- With only one of the two earlier values there is no answer, with the message "Enter both your science GPA so far and the credits it covers."
- The arithmetic is exact on the decimals as typed. GPAs show to two decimals, rounded half up.
Worked examples by hand
Biology A- (4), chemistry B+ (4), physics B (4), calculus A (3). 3.7 × 4 + 3.3 × 4 + 3 × 4 + 4 × 3 = 14.8 + 13.2 + 12 + 12 = 52 points over 15 credits: 3.47.
A (3), B (1.5), C+ (4). 12 + 4.5 + 9.2 = 25.7 points over 8.5 credits: 3.02.
The first set, with a 3.2 GPA over 30 earlier credits. (3.2 × 30 + 52) ÷ (30 + 15) = 148 ÷ 45: 3.29 over 45 credits.
Other questions people ask
How do I calculate my science GPA?
Take only your science courses. Multiply each grade’s points by the credits, add them up, and divide by the science credits. A- in 4 credits, B+ in 4, B in 4 and A in 3 give (14.8 + 13.2 + 12 + 12) ÷ 15 = 52 ÷ 15 = 3.47.
Which courses count toward a science GPA?
For the AMCAS medical school application, the BCPM GPA covers biology, chemistry, physics and math. That includes courses such as anatomy, genetics, microbiology, physiology, biochemistry, organic chemistry, astronomy, calculus and statistics.
Does a natural science course count?
Not in the BCPM GPA. The AMCAS guide says that natural and physical sciences courses are not included in it.
How is a course classified if it covers two subjects?
AMCAS says to classify a course by its primary content. For an interdisciplinary course, check the course description on your school’s website or ask your prehealth advisor.
Will my result match my AMCAS GPA?
It may differ a little. AMCAS works out its own GPAs from your transcripts, and this page uses one common 4.0 scale. Treat the result as an estimate.
I have more than 8 science courses. What do I do?
Open "Add earlier science courses" and enter your science GPA so far with the credits it covers. Then enter your newest courses in the rows.
