What is my middle school GPA?

Pick a letter grade for each class. The middle school GPA calculator counts every class the same, with no credit hours, and gives your unweighted GPA on the 4.0 scale.

Your numbers

Your GPA
3.38

Your GPA is 3.38 over 6 classes.

Classes counted
6
Grade points
20.3

Your GPA: 3.38. Your GPA is 3.38 over 6 classes.

How to calculate

Computes a middle school grade point average on the unweighted 4.0 scale from letter grades, with every class counted the same and no credit hours.

Example with the default inputs (Class 1 grade A, Class 2 grade B+, Class 3 grade A-, Class 4 grade B, Class 5 grade A, Class 6 grade C+, Class 7 grade Not counted, Class 8 grade Not counted): Your GPA is 3.38 over 6 classes.

Method: GPA = the sum of the grade points of the classes ÷ the number of classes.

  • Every class counts the same: there are no credit hours. Some schools weight classes differently.
  • This is an unweighted GPA: honors and high school credit classes get no extra points.
  • Grade points are on the 4.0 scale: A+ and A 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D- 0.7, F 0.0.
  • The GPA is shown to two decimal places, rounded half up.

How it works

This is the GPA calculator with no credit hours. For the classes with a letter grade:

  • Grade points = the sum of each class’s points: A+ and A 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D- 0.7, F (or E) 0.0.
  • Classes counted = the number of classes with a letter grade. A class marked Not counted is left out of both numbers. An F counts, with 0 points.
  • Your GPA = grade points ÷ classes counted, shown to two decimals, rounded half up.

Rules

  • There are up to 8 classes. The default fills the first 6.
  • With no class counted there is no answer, with the message "Pick a letter grade for at least one class."
  • The arithmetic is exact: points are whole tenths, and the GPA is rounded once at the end.
  • The GPA is unweighted, so honors and high school credit classes get no extra points. An A+ is worth the same as an A, so the GPA cannot pass 4.0.

Worked examples by hand

A, B, C, D. 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 10 points over 4 classes: 2.5.

A, B+, A-, B, A, C+. 4 + 3.3 + 3.7 + 3 + 4 + 2.3 = 20.3 points over 6 classes: 3.38.

A, F, B-, with the other rows not counted. 4 + 0 + 2.7 = 6.7 points over 3 classes: 2.23.

A+, A. 4 + 4 = 8 points over 2 classes: 4.

Other questions people ask

How do I calculate my middle school GPA?

Turn each letter grade into points, add them up, and divide by the number of classes. A, B, C and D are worth 4, 3, 2 and 1, so those four grades give 10 ÷ 4 = 2.5. One middle school describes exactly this method on its awards page.

Do I need credit hours?

Not on this page. Every class counts the same, so you only pick grades. If your school gives some classes more weight, use the GPA calculator and enter that weight as the credits.

How much is each letter grade worth?

A+ and A are 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D- 0.7, and F 0.0. If your school has no plus or minus grades, just pick A, B, C, D or F.

Is a 3.5 GPA good in middle school?

Schools set their own bars. One district gives Honor Roll for a GPA of 3.0 to 3.49 and High Honor Roll for 3.5 to 4.0, so a 3.5 would be at the top tier there. Check your own school’s rule.

Do all classes count?

It depends on the school. One district counts all the classes on a student’s schedule each trimester. Pick Not counted for a class with no letter grade or one your school leaves out.

Does middle school GPA count for college?

Usually the high school transcript is what colleges see, but a high school credit class taken in middle school may count there. Ask your school counselor how your district handles it.
